Where it started
A little tea room in Chapeltown, Sheffield.
It began in a little tea room in Chapeltown, Sheffield, run by mum and daughter. Think cosy, home-baked Yorkshire comfort, mismatched china cups and saucers, and scones still warm from the oven.
Mum was the baker. Her generously sized, soft and flavour-packed scones quickly became a firm favourite — and her fruity scones even earned her a spot in the local newspaper.
But we didn't stop at fruit.
Savoury scones were served warm with our homemade Mediterranean chutney — a rich, tomato-based vegetable chutney that showed us just how much more you could do with the humble scone.
Then life moved on
But the idea never really disappeared.
The tea room closed. Mum eventually retired, and her daughter moved into a very different world of corporate life.
But the scones — and the idea behind them — never really disappeared.
Because we think the humble scone has been a little misrepresented.
Too often it's treated as something predictable. Plain or fruit. Jam or cream. Afternoon tea and that's about it.
We remember it differently.
Warm from the oven. Properly comforting. Generous. Homemade. And capable of carrying some seriously good flavours.
A new chapter
Now it's the daughter's turn.
Sconin brings that story into a new chapter.
This time, the daughter is taking the lead, supported by her husband and her own daughter — bringing a little bit of the family story full circle.
We're taking what we loved about those tea-room days — warmth, proper home baking and food that makes you feel good — and giving it a new identity.
There will be familiar flavours. There will be unexpected ones. Sweet scones, savoury scones and combinations that might make you raise an eyebrow before you take a bite.
And, in time, the homemade jams and chutneys will be making a comeback too.
Yorkshire roots
Reinvigorating the humble scone.
For us, home comfort isn't about pretending it's still the good old days.
It's that familiar feeling when something takes you back — a kitchen table, something warm from the oven, countryside outside the window, a proper cup of tea, or a flavour you'd almost forgotten.
Sconin is rooted in South Yorkshire, its warmth, countryside, heritage and straightforward approach to good food.
No fuss. No pretending to be something we're not.
Just really good scones with a bit more about them.
And those homemade jams and chutneys?
They're coming back too.
